Evaluation of trends in prescribing to opioid naïve

Summary

This project found that the amount of initial opioid prescribing to opioid-naïve patients in surgery, emergency medicine and dentistry increased between 2010 and 2016. This happened while the focus of reduction had been on primary care with many statewide and national guidelines developed. Meanwhile, surgery, dentistry and emergency medicine received little attention and opioid prescribing to opioid naïve by these disciplines grew.
