The Effect of Mandatory Prescriber Use of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs: Evidence from Kentucky

Summary

In 2012, Kentucky passed comprehensive legislation aimed at addressing the problem of prescription opioid abuse. A critical element of this reform is a requirement that prescribers register with the state’s prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) and access the system before prescribing opioids. This study uses data from Kentucky’s PDMP as well as similar data from Indiana, to examine the effect of this policy on prescribing patterns.
