ORI’s Coffee Connections Series: Bringing together clinicians, basic scientists and trainees

In 2025, the Opioid Research Institute (ORI) was proud to host eight Coffee Connections events designed to spark conversation, build community and strengthen collaboration around opioid-related research at the University of Michigan. These informal gatherings brought together clinicians, basic scientists and trainees from across campus, creating space for meaningful dialogue that crosses disciplines and career stages.

Throughout the year, Coffee Connections featured a wide range of topics reflecting the breadth and depth of opioid research at U-M – from community-based program implementation and policy-relevant research to mechanistic studies of fentanyl-induced respiratory depression. Each session highlighted ongoing work at the university while encouraging open discussion, new perspectives and opportunities for collaboration.

The Coffee Connections series continues to serve as a valuable forum for connecting people who might not otherwise meet, fostering a shared commitment to advancing evidence-based approaches to addressing the opioid crisis. ORI is grateful to all the speakers and participants who contributed their time, expertise and curiosity, helping make the 2025 series a success. We look forward to continuing these conversations in 2026.
