In 2022, the Michigan Legislature created the Opioid Advisory Commission (OAC) to “[r]eview local, state, and federal initiatives and activities related to education, prevention, treatment, and services for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, and establish priorities to address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, for the purpose of recommending funding initiatives to the legislature.” The Commission, housed within the Michigan Legislative Council, reports annually to “the Governor, the Attorney General, the Senate Majority Leader, the Speaker of the House, and the chairs of the Senate and House appropriation committees.”

Dr. Amy Bohnert, PhD, was appointed to the Commission in March 2025. Dr. Bohnert is co-director of U-M’s Opioid Research Institute and the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network. Dr. Bohnert is a Professor at the University of Michigan in the Departments of Anesthesiology (primary), Psychiatry, and Epidemiology. Dr. Bohnert focuses her research on epidemiology and brief interventions regarding chronic pain, opioid misuse, overdose, substance use and related disorders.
